1968 - Founded in an old bandage factory in Sheboygan, Wisconsin by Dan Merkel.

1978 - First international expansion.

1980 - AO named US Department of Commerce E-Star Award for outstanding accomplishments in international trade.

1984 - Dan Merkel named Wisconsin Small Business Person of the Year.

2002 - American Orthodontics wins Wisconsin Manufacturer of the Year.

2003 - AO introduces Radiance, the clear, cosmetic bracket.

2009 - Empower self ligating bracket is introduced and becomes AO's leading bracket in this category.

2009 - AO wins its second Wisconsin Manufacturer of the Year award.

2011 - Radiance Plus is introduced and replaces the original Radiance bracket. With its superior clarity, stronger tie-wings and the Quad-Matte® Base, this bracket is one of most beautiful brackets available.

2013 - AO moves to its new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, bringing all production under one roof.

2017 - AO introduces BracePaste Medium Viscosity Adhesive.

2020 - AO launches Empower 2 Clear.
